Kansas State’s loss to Cincinnati raised plenty of questions, but Collin Klein’s own defense of his offensive line created one of the biggest. Klein pushed back on criticism of the Wildcats' offensive line by pointing toward the numbers. Kansas State is averaging 5.2 yards per carry. Avery Johnson hasn't been sacked this season. The Wildcats also rank ninth nationally in runs of 10-plus yards per game. Those are strong arguments for an offensive line that entered the season surrounded by questions. But they also create another question. If Klein has that much confidence in his offensive line, why didn't Kansas State trust that group in a critical 4th-and-short situation? K-State had an opportunity near the goal line where an aggressive decision could have completely changed the 31-26 loss. There's also the Jay Harris question. Harris didn't play a single offensive snap against Cincinnati despite possessing the physical running style that could potentially help Kansas State in short-yardage situations. None of this means Klein suddenly can't coach. He's a first-year head coach making these decisions for the first time, and some growing pains should probably be expected. But Kansas State lost its first Big 12 game by five points. When the margin is that small, every decision matters.
