Kansas State allowed 271 rushing yards in its 31-26 loss to Cincinnati, but Collin Klein revealed one number that completely changes the conversation. Five plays. According to Klein, nearly 200 of Cincinnati's 271 rushing yards came on just five plays. So what does that tell us about Kansas State's defense? On one hand, it's encouraging. Eliminate a handful of catastrophic mistakes and the overall defensive performance looks dramatically different. On the other hand, allowing five massive rushing plays in one game is a serious problem. Klein identified several reasons for those breakdowns. Eye discipline wasn't consistently good enough. Players lost gap responsibility. At times, defenders tried to make the play themselves instead of trusting the scheme and the teammates around them. That's how a manageable run suddenly becomes an explosive play. The good news is Kansas State now has a bye week to address it. Jordan Peterson's defense was excellent statistically through the opening weeks of the season before Cincinnati exposed some significant problems. Now we'll find out whether those problems require major changes or simply better execution. Because if Kansas State can eliminate those five plays, the Cincinnati loss suddenly looks very different.
